Ready to be inspired by some of fashion's most influential women? We asked three of Atterley's award-winning boutique owners, with inspirational stories of their own, to name the female designers and creative directors they respect the most.

We all know that clothes we wear relate to so much more than passing seasonal trends. They allow us the freedom to express our individuality, our personality, and our creativity. They can empower, embolden and inspire. In an often male-dominated industry, this is our opportunity to support fashion made for women, by women. To celebrate the return of International Women’s Day, we bring you a specially curated edit of the female designers and women-led labels that have changed the game and blazed a trail for generations to come.

Diane Von Furstenberg

Diane Von Furstenberg

Sarah Murray is the owner of beloved Edinburgh fashion institution Jane Davidson. Founded by her mother - the boutique's namesake - back in 1969, the store originally stocked only British designers such as Jean Muir, Gina Fratini and Janice Wainwright. Over the years the business has evolved to showcase an exciting roster of innovative international design talents, as well as leading luxury labels. Mary Katrantzou, Smythe and Helmut Lang name but a few. With International Women's Day in mind, Sarah named American powerhouse Diane Von Furstenberg as her ultimate female fashion icon:

"There are so many women in fashion who inspire me, but if I were to pick just one, Diane Von Furstenberg stands out as an obvious choice. Since the 70s her impeccable designs have been transforming women's wardrobes, making them look amazing whilst effortlessly instilling confidence and strength. Known the world over for her signature wrap dresses, high-octane prints, elegant separates and enticing evening gowns, I know first hand that my customers feel great wearing DVF's beautifully conceived, always flattering designs."

Lily and Lionel

Lily and Lionel

Having risen up the ranks in the fashion industry: from shop assistant to one of the country's most respected independent retailers, Deryane Tadd, owner of St Albans style spot The Dressing Room, knows a thing or two about what empowers female customers. Since opening in 2005, her expertly curated store has gained a loyal following of fashion-savvy shoppers thanks to a fresh and exciting brand mix that appeals to customers of all ages and tastes. For IWD, Deryane named British brand Lily and Lionel as her inspiring label to know:

"The Dressing Room has stocked the brand Lily and Lionel for a number of years now, and have seen it develop over the seasons, which is a credit to Creative Director Alice Stone's vision for the brand. Lily and Lionel epitomise the fashion-forward woman who has a soft, feminine yet edgy style, who oozes confidence and self-awareness. It is a pleasure to have a great relationship with Alice, so much so that we have created exclusive designs with Lily and Lionel for the last few seasons, which have been hugely successful and reflect the strong collaboration we have as two female-led brands. "

Bella Freud

Bella Freud

Shoe designer turned shopkeeper Zoie Walker set up 32 The Guild in Northhampton's vibrant cultural corner in 2013. Having relocated from the bustling London fashion scene, her entrepreneurial instinct kicked in when she saw a gap in the market for a curated, design-led fashion and lifestyle destination in the town. Since then the East Midlands boutique has gone from strength to strength, now firmly on the map as one of the country's most stylish indie retailers. 32 The Guild is loved for its eclectic selection of cult labels and contemporary design - expect to see it-buy shoes and boots by Grenson alongside wardrobe essentials from the likes of Bellerose and Jumper1234. Zoie named it-list British designer Bella Freud as her ultimate female fashion inspiration:

"If I were to choose a female designer who I respect and who inspires me it would be Bella Freud. She has created a style that is instantly recognisable. She is a non-conformist which I love, she is the master of understated cool. When I buy a Bella Freud garment I know I will have it in my wardrobe for many years to come. I love that her pieces are timeless, intellectual and playful."
