“Print is always a massive consideration at The Mercantile and a major part of our buy for autumn/winter. Our customers feel that print makes a garment unique. So, whether it’s a work blouse or a dress for a wedding, our print selection is carefully curated and exclusive to our designers—meaning your special purchase remains special, unique and individual. For winter 19 we were heavily inspired by the late '60s, early '70s. Katherine Graham was our style icon—lots of sharp punchy prints, off-skew colours, knee high boots and big glasses. Truman Capote’s black and white ball was a great reference point for some of the wildest socialites and their '60s style, this was certainly the main point of influence for the Stine Goya collection which we always love for their use of print. We have almost psychedelic paisley and the ever popular ditsy floral, which is more of a no-brainer but works hard in your wardrobe and transcends seasons and trends.”

Autumn Layering

Autumn Layering

“We are massive fans of layering for many reasons. Busy lives means flexibility in an outfit is a bonus. Buy a dress that works with a knitted sweater on top. Then, come evening, strip that back and add some heels and you're party-ready. These multifunctional pieces are the hardest working and worth every penny. This season we have seen a massive shift towards layering summer dresses – any dresses, really – with knitwear and hiking boots, giving a really contemporary feel and getting a bit more wear out of a piece that may have been shelved for the colder temperatures. We're mad about chunky sweaters, great sweatshirts and hand-knit cardigans that add texture, style and warmth.”

New Heritage

New Heritage

“Classics and traditional craftsmanship are a mainstay—particularly during winter, when people are happy to spend a little more on something that will last. Customers look out for pure wool and hand-crafted pieces, and there has been a swell of interest in sustainability that has encouraged us to buy more ethically traded pieces using some of the most planet-friendly fabrics and technologies, whilst keeping alive amazing crafts. We work with so many brands that are pioneering in this field. It restores our faith that not everyone wants fast fashion, a lot of people really consider the provenance of a product, they want to know more about what they are buying and its impact. We're not big on the momentary trends but instead value the integrity of the product and how long it will last, how well it will wear and how long it will stay as a valued piece in your wardrobe.”
