STYLE BY CITY: NEW YORK TREND WATCH

Looking for fresh fashion inspiration? According to Manhattan’s trendsetters, these are winning styles of the season.

There are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to Fashion Week dressing. For the New York style set, this meant getting experimental. Show attendees battled their winter woes with bold colours and playful layering, putting the emphasis on their outerwear; duvet-like styles and technicolor faux fur were popular choices. Chunky boots and boxy blazers gave even the most feminine and floral of frocks an urban edge. Colours were blocked and prints were clashed, resulting in plenty of clever contrasts to inspire.

But as always, certain motifs made it straight to the top of our wishlists. Keep scrolling to see the three looks we'll be shopping this season...

The ultimate transitional piece, trench coats were having a moment at NYFW. The Parisian staple was given a Manhatten update, grunged up with heavy-duty biker boots by It-girls Leonie Hanne and Jessie Bush. While the odd pastel or printed iteration was spotted, classic beige ultimately reigned supreme. The best bit? This is one of the most wearable trends we’ve seen at Fashion Month.

Fact: checks are, and always will be, the coolest print. We’ve seen them on Burberry linings; they’ve evolved into gingham, plaid, houndstooth. Checks have been revived time and time again, and still the fashion set are finding new ways to wear them. This time, heritage-style jackets were popular, but layered in unconventional ways. See Alyssa Coscarelli’s blazer-dress hybrid, worn (once again) with chunky boots. We’re sensing a theme here.

Leather Love

Leather Love

Texture was front and centre at New York Fashion Week. From sequins to shearling, quilting to PVC, the style set didn’t hold back on their fabric choices. Leather suits were an unexpected favourite, alongside 80’s-esque biker jackets and hints of suede. French girl Sabina Socol married the latter two perfectly, creating an effortlessly elegant ensemble. If you like the look but don’t want to wear real leather, Nanushka is the brand for you.
